Percussion
Percussion instruments are considered to be the oldest instruments, after the human voice. Any instrument that is played by being hit or scraped is a percussion instrument. This includes clapping hands, as well as the modern piano.
Drums are the best known percussion instruments. They are played all over the world to accompany many different styles of music. They provide the beat for most modern bands, and are essential for any marching band, including the Queen's Guards.
Drums are traditionally made from skins stretched over a hollow frame. Drums have different pitches depending on their size, if the player tightens, or loosens their skin, or if the player hits the skin closer or further away from the centre. The largest drum in an orchestra measures about 50cm in diameter.
